What is infertility?

Infertility is the inability to conceive a baby after trying for 12 months. Or, if over the age of 35, the WHASN West Valley team may diagnose infertility after six months of trying to conceive since the remaining time window to have a child is smaller in that case. Almost 20% of women experience infertility in their childbearing years.

What causes infertility?

Infertility can affect both women and men. In women, some of the most common causes are:

  • Ovulation problems
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Blocked fallopian tubes
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Among infertile couples, infertility is a female reproductive system issue in about one-third of all cases. It’s a male problem in about one-third of cases, and the remaining one-third of couples have issues affecting them both or have undetermined causes.

Health factors like diabetes, drinking excessively, being overweight or underweight, smoking, and substance abuse can increase the risk of infertility in either sex.

How is infertility diagnosed?

Infertility diagnosis includes a full medical history review and a detailed discussion of current lifestyle. WHASN West Valley is a one-stop shop for women’s health care because they offer comprehensive diagnostic testing in the office to help narrow down the causes of your infertility.

You may need hormone testing, ovarian reserve testing, imaging studies, or other types of tests to determine the right steps to take next.

How is infertility treated?

Infertility treatment is unique to each person. Your age, the cause of your infertility, general health, and personal goals all play a big role in how you approach infertility.

Fertility drugs can regulate or stimulate ovulation, so they’re often an early approach alongside lifestyle changes.

Studies show that minimally invasive procedures like laparoscopy (for endometriosis) and MyoSure®, and TruClear(for fibroids) can improve the chances of conception.

Intrauterine insemination helps many women conceive, and there are also assisted reproductive technology options like in vitro fertilization (IVF), donor eggs or sperm, and gestational surrogacy.

WHASN West Valley understands that infertility can be a frustrating and heartbreaking challenge. The team is here to support you through this difficult time in your life by providing answers and options that work for your needs and goals.
