What is menopause?

Menopause occurs when you haven’t had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. Most women go through menopause in their early 50s.

In the years before menopause (perimenopause), most women experience a variety of uncomfortable physical, emotional, and cognitive changes due to a declining estrogen level.

You can also enter surgical menopause at any age if you have a hysterectomy that includes ovary removal.

What symptoms occur during menopause?

Perimenopause is the period in which most symptoms occur, but some women have symptoms for years after menopause.

Some changes you may experience include:

  • Irregular periods (when periods completely stop, it’s officially menopause)
  • Hot flashes
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Night sweats
  • Brain fog or confusion
  • Low libido
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Weight gain
  • Mood changes, such as depression and unusual mood swings
  • Thinning hair
  • Dry skin

In perimenopause, symptoms may be mild but grow stronger over time. Your ovaries shrink during perimenopause, leading to less and less estrogen production until you have just half of the estrogen you had in your 20s.

If you experience surgical menopause, symptoms come on very suddenly and can be quite intense.

Lack of estrogen also causes other problems. You can lose up to one-quarter of your bone density after menopause due to estrogen loss, which may lead to osteoporosis. Estrogen helps prevent cardiovascular disease, so estrogen loss can increase your heart attack and stroke risk.

Can I prevent estrogen loss during menopause?

You can’t prevent menopause, but you can replace the hormones you lose during that time. WHASN West Valley offers bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, which establishes a steady dose of estrogen in your bloodstream to relieve and prevent menopause symptoms.

The team performs lab testing in the office to determine the ideal level of hormones for your body. They then perform a simple procedure to insert tiny Biote® pellets under the skin of your buttocks.

The pellets deliver hormones continuously for three to six months. Biote pellets are derived from all-natural plant sources. The hormones are duplicates of those the body makes on its own, so your body uses them in the same way.

Menopause is a natural part of life, but you don’t have to accept its uncomfortable symptoms. WHASN West Valley can support you through the transition and help you live your best life. Call the office or click the online scheduler to make an appointment now.
