What is a well-woman exam?

Well-woman exams are annual visits that allow you to get the screenings appropriate for your age and gynecologic needs. They’re also a chance to connect with your practitioner about any questions or concerns.

Girls can begin coming in for well-woman exams during their late teenage years. These early visits usually don’t include a pelvic exam but allow young women to start building a trusting bond with their practitioner.

Women should have annual well-woman exams throughout their lives, including after menopause

What happens during a well-woman exam?

The initial portion of the visit focused on gathering routine information like your height, weight, and vital signs. Your heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature might be checked and added to your medical record.

A pelvic exam is the next step. As you recline comfortably on the treatment table, your gynecologist gently uses a speculum device to separate your vaginal walls.

Your specialist visually checks your vulval, vaginal, and cervical tissue for signs of abnormality.  A Pap smear test is sometimes done during your pelvic exams. This simple screening gathers a small number of cervical cells that a lab examines for signs of cancerous changes.

Pap smear testing can catch cervical cancer in the earliest possible stage. If your last Pap test came back with normal results, you might not need another one for several years.

What kinds of issues can I discuss during my well-woman exams?

The best way to get the most out of your well-woman exams is to be as open and honest with your provider as possible. Your OB/GYN is here to assist with any questions or concerns you have, so don’t be shy about broaching any subject.

Some of the issues women discuss during well-woman exams include:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Sexually transmitted disease prevention, screening, and treatment
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Lack of sex drive
  • Sexual health
  • Signs of urinary tract infection
  • Birth control
  • Infertility
  • Menopause symptoms

Nothing is off limits, and remember that your health is your provider’s sole focus. When you’re ready to book a well-woman exam, scheduling options include a quick call or a visit to the online booking page.
